3 Ingredient Home Microdermabrasion Alternative

We might not be able to get out and enjoy usual beauty treatments but we can still take care of our skin at home.  Today I’m sharing with you my very simple, 3 ingredient home exfoliation recipe.  It’s not quite the same as a microdermabrasion, but it’s certainly a good second best in these current times!
This recipe uses ingredients you might already have in your cupboards, or can get hold of easily enough.

Granulated sugar

The star of this face scrub is granulated sugar.  It’s quite abrasive, relatively inexpensive and does a good job of exfoliating the skin – removing dead and dull skin.  If you don’t have any granulated sugar in your cupboards, you can use soft brown sugar or caster sugar as an alternative.


Coconut oil
Virgin coconut oil is very moisturising for the skin – it’s an ingredient that is regularly used in moisturisers and scrubs and is great for dry skin.  It can be quite nice to massage the silky smooth oil into the skin.

If you don’t have any coconut oil or are allergic you can swap it out for olive oil, almond oil, jojoba oil or grape seed oil.


Lemon juice

Lemon contains good amounts of vitamin C and is great for the skin – it can help to even out skin tone and tighten open pores.

You can use freshly squeezed lemon juice or juice from a bottle, either is fine.


How to make this simple exfoliating scrub

Makes enough for 1 application.  Takes 2 minutes to make.


  • 1 tbsp coconut oil (or alternative)
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar (or alternative)


How to use

Mix the ingredients together with a spoon in a bowl.  Take small amounts and apply to a cleansed face in upward circular motions.  Apply to the whole face including the chin, cheeks and forehead in upward circular motions until the sugar dissolves completely.

The solid oil will naturally melt as you apply the scrub through the warmth of your hands and face.  You may want to use a towel in case any drips, or only apply small amounts at a time.

You can make more and store in an airtight container or mason jar for up to 3 months.
