Microdermabrasion FAQ

Common questions about microdermabrasion answered

How long does microdermabrasion take?

A single session usually lasts for 30-40 minutes.

How many treatments are needed?

This depends on your individual skin and your goals for it.  After the first treatment your skin should appear radiant and soft.  If you wish to treat skin conditions such as acne, additional treatments may be required.

Some people schedule treatment every two weeks or month for the glow it brings to their skin, and the confidence boost it gives them.

Like ordinary exfoliation the effects are not necessarily permanent.  This is because our skin regenerates every 30 days on average.

Is there any benefit to having more than one session?

The effects of microdermabrasion are cumulative, so in theory yes, though it depends on what your goals are.

What happens after treatment?

Your skin will be a little pink, however this usually fades within a few hours.  It may also feel like you have minor sunburn for a day or two afterwards, this can depend on the sensitivity on your skin.

Can I use makeup after treatment?

Yes you can use moisturisers and non-medicated cleaners freely right after treatment.

Is microdermabrasion painful?

No it should never be painful since the procedure only works on the surface layers of the skin.  Some people liken it to a minor tugging on their skin, or the rough feel of a cats tongue.

If you’re feeling uncomfortable let the technician know and they can soften the pressure they use.

What are the possible risks of microdermabrasion?

The risks and side-effects involved are very minimal since microdermabrasion affects only the outermost skin layer (the epidermis).  Some minor temporary side-effects may include sensitivity, redness or bruising.

It is important that the treatment provider wears gloves and sterilises the tip of the tool.

Can microdermabrasion remove scars?

It can’t completely remove them but it can make them less visually obvious by soothing the skin.  This is because most scarring is one layer below the epidermis, the layer that the treatment targets.

How many sessions are needed to treat acne?

This depends on the individual, however generally there will be a significant improvement after several treatments.
